Wild Country Geo Nut Set is the most recommended first passive protection purchase. We looked at how the Geo nut geometry compares to Black Diamond Stoppers and assessed appropriate first-trad-rack composition.
Who it's for
Buy this if: Beginning trad climbers assembling their first rack.
Skip this if: Exclusively sport climbers who don't need passive protection.
In practice
Passive vs. Active Protection
Cams (active): mechanical lobes expand to fill crack diameter — can seat in parallel-sided and irregular cracks. Nuts (passive): wedge shape seats only in naturally constricting crack sections. Nuts are lighter, cheaper, and required for thin crack placements where cams can't fit. Both are needed for a full trad rack.
