Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter Review (2026)

Sawyer Squeeze uses a hollow fiber membrane that filters to 0.1 micron — removing all bacteria and protozoa (not viruses). It flows at 1.7 L/min (fastest in its class), weighs 3 oz, and is rated for 100,000 gallons — effectively lifetime use. It's the most widely used backpacking filter in the world.

The short version

Sawyer Squeeze is the default recommendation for backpacking water filtration. We researched flow rate maintenance through 50 backflush cycles and compared it to MSR TrailShot.

Who it's for

Buy this if: Backpackers in North America where virus risk is low and bacteria/protozoa are the primary water concern.

Skip this if: International travelers where viral contamination is a concern — Sawyer Squeeze does not remove viruses.

In practice

Hollow Fiber Membrane

Sawyer Squeeze uses U-shaped hollow fiber tubes — 0.1-micron pores allow water molecules through but are too small for bacteria (0.2-10 microns) and protozoa (2-50 microns). The filter physically excludes pathogens rather than using chemicals. No iodine taste, no waiting time.

Backflushing Protocol

Flow rate decreases as debris clogs fiber pores. Backflush by pushing clean water backward through the filter — the included cleaning plunger works, but gravity backflushing with a full squeeze bag is faster. After 20 liters of use in silty water, backflush. After 100 liters in clear water.

What we loved
+ 100,000-gallon lifetime rating+ 3 oz — lightest quality filter in the category+ 1.7 L/min flow rate — fastest hollow fiber filter available
What we'd change
Does not remove viruses — not for international travel Requires backflushing to maintain flow rate Freezing destroys the membrane — don't leave it in your pack overnight in freezing temps

Common questions

Does it remove chemicals?
No — hollow fiber membranes filter physical pathogens only. For chemical contamination, add a squeeze filter in series with an activated carbon element (Sawyer Activated Carbon Filter).
Can I drink directly from the source?
Yes — scoop water into the provided squeeze bag and drink through the filter tip directly.
