Petzl Reverso Review (2026)

Petzl Reverso is a tube-style belay/rappel device with a guide mode slot that allows belaying a follower directly off the anchor — the technique used on multi-pitch climbing for the second climber. At 2.3 oz, it's lighter than GriGri for trad and multi-pitch use.

The short version

Petzl Reverso is the multi-pitch standard belay/rappel device. We explained the guide mode function and compared it to GriGri for different climbing contexts.

Who it's for

Buy this if: Multi-pitch and trad climbers who belay followers from anchor positions.

Skip this if: Sport climbers exclusively — GriGri's assisted braking provides safety redundancy for lead belaying.

In practice

Guide Mode

In guide mode, the Reverso is attached to the anchor with the rope running through in a specific orientation. A follower's fall causes the rope to cam against the device — automatically locking without the belayer actively catching. This allows the lead climber to redirect attention while the second climbs, a key efficiency on multi-pitch routes.

What we loved

What we'd change
