LOKSAK OPSAK Review (2026)

LOKSAK OPSAK uses a multi-layer barrier film that blocks volatile organic compounds — the scent particles that attract bears and other wildlife. They're used by rangers to contain food scent in place of a bear canister in some regulations. They work with or inside Ursack bear bags for double scent barrier.

The short version

LOKSAK OPSAK are the odor barrier bags used by professional wilderness guides. We researched the scent containment claim and looked at regulatory acceptance.

Who it's for

Buy this if: Backpackers using Ursack or hanging bear bag systems who want additional odor containment.

Skip this if: Hikers using hard bear canisters — OPSAK adds odor containment not present in hard canisters but may not be required.

In practice

Scent vs. Physical Containment

A bear canister physically prevents access. OPSAK prevents the canister from broadcasting scent that attracts bears in the first place. Combined: bear doesn't smell the food (OPSAK) → bear doesn't interact with the canister → zero incident. Many guide services use OPSAK + Ursack as their standard system.

What we loved
+ Hermetic seal blocks food odors that attract bears+ Reusable — not a disposable Ziploc+ Accepted by some regulations as an Ursack supplement
What we'd change
Not a stand-alone bear protection method — must be used with approved containment
