In practice
Spike Depth and Angle
Yaktrax spring coils: 1mm traction depth, effective to 15-degree ice angle. Kahtoola Microspikes: 5mm spike depth, effective to 40+ degrees. On winter trail approaches, switchbacks with hard ice packs regularly exceed 20 degrees. Microspikes are the minimum tool for this terrain; Yaktrax will result in falls.
