Enlightened Equipment Enigma is the best-regarded ultralight quilt. We looked at the quilt vs. sleeping bag physics and evaluated who benefits from switching.
Who it's for
Buy this if: Thru-hikers and serious ultralight backpackers who sleep still and want the lightest sleeping system.
Skip this if: Restless sleepers or anyone uncomfortable with open side airflow — quilts require technique that sleeping bags don't.
In practice
Bottom Insulation Physics
In a sleeping bag, the bottom insulation compresses under body weight to near-zero loft. Compressed down provides R-0.5 vs. lofted down's R-3+. You're sleeping on the dead weight of insulation that does nothing. A quilt removes this weight. The sleeping pad provides the bottom insulation the quilt eliminates. Weight savings: 8-12 oz per 20°F bag.
