Who it's for
Buy this if: Hikers who want reliable rain protection without spending $200+.
Skip this if: Technical mountaineers or anyone in extreme sustained precipitation — cheaper waterproofing degrades faster under heavy use.
In practice
Breathability Limits
Columbia Watertight II is a 2-layer construction — waterproof face, laminated backing. Moisture vapor from sweat moves through at ~8,000 g/m²/24h. Under aerobic hiking activity, this is insufficient — you get wet from sweat inside the jacket at sustained effort. Best use: worn stationary at camp or during light activity, not strenuous hiking in rain.
