EPS vs. Hybrid Shell

Black Diamond Half Dome uses EPS (expanded polystyrene) throughout. Single-impact protection: excellent. After a serious impact, EPS compresses and loses integrity — the helmet must be replaced even without visible damage. Hybrid shell helmets (Petzl Meteor) use a hard outer shell over EPS — better multi-impact resistance but 2x the price.
