Natrapel 8-Hour is the DEET replacement. We looked at how picaridin effectiveness compares to DEET across mosquito and tick species and evaluated the plastic-compatibility advantage.
Who it's for
Buy this if: Hikers with synthetic gear who want to avoid DEET's plastic-degrading properties.
Skip this if: Anyone using standard cotton gear where DEET's plastic damage is not a concern.
In practice
Picaridin vs. DEET
Both are EPA-registered repellents with equivalent efficacy against mosquitoes and most tick species. The difference: DEET dissolves acrylics, rayon, spandex, and polycarbonate (watch crystals, camera lenses, tent zippers). Picaridin does not. For hikers with synthetic gear, picaridin eliminates the equipment damage risk.
